Minecraft: Pocket Edition adds new features

Minecraft for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices just got a little more dangerous as a new update was recently released that adds two new mobs, a new weapon and a host of fixes.

The 0.3.3 update adds skeletons and spiders to Minecraft: Pocket Edition to try and hunt you down and kill you in the darkest corners of the game or at night. Fear not though as you've also been granted access to the bow and arrow to defend yourself against these angry mobs.

Mojang also says it fixed around 20 or so bugs including including a furnace crash, burning world, sapling/leaves fixes and it even adds a larger inventory selection bar.

You can check out the complete list of additions and fixes for Minecraft: Pocket Edition below;

New features
  • Added skeletons and spiders.
  • Added bow and arrow.
  • Added bone meal and flint.
  • Mobs can drop items.
  • Torches can now be placed on fences.
Tweaks
  • Item decay time extended to 5 minutes.
  • Boosted brightness slightly.
  • Item slots has been expanded to a minimum of 6 slots (minus one for inventory).
Bug fixes
  • Crash bug with furnace
  • Removed fire (except on mobs in sunlight), only tested for newly started maps.
  • A bug where cactus and door placed next to each other would remove the bottom door block (and top one if a 2 level cactus).
  • Removed particles from spawning when you hit the edges of the world.
  • Stairs now block light.
  • A bug where fence gate would not appear in the user’s hand but in the world.
  • When a user sood on a slab and created another one, the user simply fell through.
  • You can no longer get unlimited diamonds, gold and iron by breaking apart blocks of them and building together as a new block.
  • Swords now take damage from hitting mobs.
  • Golden tools are no longer tougher than wooden tools.
  • The rear end texture where upside down on some animals.
  • The D-pad on ipad no longer intersects with the item slots.
  • Users can no longer place sugar cane in water.
  • Dark green leaves have correct textures when cut by shear.
  • Dandelion “egg” fixed.
  • Blocks placed on snow aren’t duplicated in multiplayer.

Genderless Minecraft

Notch recently wrote about how his intentions for Minecraft were always for everything included to be genderless and not force the player to choose in a game he views as having no set genders;

"All the other mobs in the game are genderless and usually exhibit the most prominent traits of both genders"

Notch has also revealed that his intention for the 'Steve' character was always meant to be genderless;

"The human model is intended to represent a Human Being. Not a male Human Being or a female Human Being, but simply a Human Being"

He also regrets naming the character;

"I do regret using masculine terms to talk about the default character. These days I try to use the up-and-coming use of “they” as a genderless pronoun"

0x10c voice-over backstory

Want to get pumped to play 0x10c when its released? This voice-over may be just the ticket.

Notch 'no plans to repeat Minecraft success"

Notch has recently revealed that he plans to focus on "small niche games" following the success of his sandbox adventure game,

Minecraft. Acknowledging the recent success of the console edition of Minecraft, which already sold over 1 million copies, he said it is unlikely he will develop another title as popular as Minecraft.

"In all seriousness, though," he said, "the massive success of XBLA Minecraft has made me decide to focus on small niche games now."

"I don't mean 'small' as in short projects, as 0x10c is a massive one. I mean ones with potentially few players." 0x10c is still early in development, however while no release date is currently scheduled it will be released early to fans as it develops, similarly to Minecraft.

0x10c will take place in a parallel universe where the space race never ended, and features random encounters, space battles, and both single and multiplayer. The title will also feature a connected economy in a similar way to Diablo 3, he states. "The hyperverse in 0x10c is based on similar ideas. 0x10c will still allow offline, though."

Minecraft Xbox 360 update revealed

4J Studios, co-developer of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, has stated what they hope to bring to the game in their next update, giving eager Minecrafters a small look at what they have in store for them in the near future.

Still lightyears behind the PC version of the game, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition players have yet to fully grasp the whole experience that is only available on the PC. Luckily for them, major updates are in development as we speak, as 4J Studios has recently Tweeted:
"We’re aiming to update to the major PC releases – first one will be the equivalent of the PC Beta 1.7.3 version."
The current version of Minecraft 360 is set on the PC Version Beta 1.6.6. This was the update just before pistons and shears were added to the game. If what they say will be the next update, the game should include the following:

  • Pistons
  • Shears (used to pick up leaf blocks and shear sheep wool)
  • Sheep will only drop wool from being killed while unsheared, no longer from being punched
  • Fixed clay generation
  • Flint and steel/redstone will be a required to ignite TNT
  • The ability to stack fences
  • New textures for Brick and Cobblestone blocks
  • Redstone wire now will connect to a repeater
It is currently unknown if customers will have to pay for future updates including customising skins and Xbox content updates.

Minecraft Xbox edition reaches 1 million copies

"In less than one week on the market, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sold more than 1,000,000 units globally" (1)

Update; Microsoft have revealed they will not be giving refunds for those who are unable to do the multiplayer due to not having high-definition television sets

Minecraft Xbox 360 review

Well, Minecraft for the Xbox has now been released, so lets go over a few things :)

Gameplay
The Xbox 360 edition is currently based on an earlier version of the PC edition (Beta 1.6.6), and therefore lacks some items and features, such as sprinting.
For the most part the Xbox 360 edition of the game is identical to the PC edition, but has several notable differences and features:
  • The player can optionally make use of Xbox Kinect functionality to assist in their gameplay, although Kinect functionality was not available at launch.
  • The Xbox 360 edition doesn't make use of the standard crafting interface as in the original version, but still has similarities to the PC's 2x2 and 3x3 crafting grids. The interface doesn't require the Player to place items in the correct place in a crafting menu, but simply shows the blocks required to craft the selected item, and crafts it if the Player has enough blocks.
  • There are 8 default skin types, all of which appear to have Steve's face, but wearing different outfits.
  • The game features split-screen functionality, however an HDTV with a Component or HDMI cable required for Split-Screen play. Up to 4 players can play in split screen*, as well as the possibility to play 8-person online multiplayer game modes in split-screen.
  • Mods, Texture Packs and extra player skins will be available much later.
  • The Xbox 360 edition includes a tutorial mode not included in the PC version of the game. This tutorial leads the player through the basics of mining and placing blocks, crafting, as well as building their first house to survive the night.
  • You cannot change a world's difficulty mid-game. You can change it when you select the world for play.
  • You always begin a new world with a map.
  • Unlike the PC version, each world in the Xbox 360 Edition is currently limited to 1024 by 1024 blocks. This is approximately the size of an in-game map. It is expected, but not known if the world size will be increased along with the updates that will bring the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft up to date with the PC version.
  • You can not walk through Sugar Cane.
Controls

The Xbox 360 controller controls:
"A" to jump/place item. "B" to drop/toss item. Right trigger to mine/destroy blocks; attack; toggle switches/doors. Left trigger to place/use block/item. Left/right bumper to change group of craftable items. "X" to open up the crafting menu and show description of highlighted item. "Y" to open up the inventory. Analog sticks to look/move/change selected item. Analog stick press down to sneak/walk.
Achievements
  • Taking Inventory - Open your inventory.
  • Getting Wood - Punch a tree until the block of wood pops out.

Trivia;
May have problems with Split-screen

Minecraft Split-screen problem

"Split-screen multiplayer in the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft requires an HDTV connection, but the game's description on the Xbox Live Marketplace website fails to note this necessity.

Minecraft's description on XBLA does list "HDTV 720p" under the "Local Capabilities" details, but that generally is taken to mean the title will support up to HD 720p, and not as a requirement. In-game, a screen prompts players to "play the game in High Definition mode" for split-screen multiplayer.

Notch wasn't aware that local multiplayer wouldn't work with standard-definition TVs, he tweeted and apologized to a fan today. Port developer 4J Studios has justified the HD requirement on Twitter: 'The inventory and crafting just didn't work in splitscreen Standard Definition - it was too small to make out.'"

For those requesting refunds, you are unlikely to receive them after this statement from Microsoft "in game prompts alert players of the HD requirements for split-screen multiplayer."

Update - Microsoft are now offering refunds

Update from me :)

By now you are all probably wondering why I have not updated this blog in so long. I would like to tell you why...

Firstly I shall address my lack of updates, and thank all of you who have visited this blog and continued to visit, your support is appreciated greatly and although it may not seem like much it is really helpful to receive support from you all. I have currently purchased a new computer/laptop and I am spending quiet a lot of money right now to bring you the best that I can give you, I have so much planned right now and so much to keep track of that unfortunately the blog has suffered a little with my absence. Don't worry, the blog will return to its prior state after I have finished with the complicated work I am doing to get the blog and video`s up and running.

From my picture the eagle-eyed amongst you have probably noticed I have a new Minecraft skin. This is due to the old one being stranded on my previous laptop with no chance of return. I would like to note also that the background is not from any filming I am currently doing, I just liked the look of the Stronghold.

I should also address something which you have all probably being dying to here about, a Minecraft video. I am currently working on what will probably be a considerably long Minecraft project based off a film which I am very interested in - yet may differ from the plot substantially. (From which you can probably expect a short sneak peek by June - though it may be considerably rough) Along with this there is also a planned Minecraft Lets Play and Minecraft Adventure Series starting in the later half of this year.

Check list;
1. New computer/laptop - Check
2. Recording software - Trial only as of now - potentially full software in 1-2 months
3. Recording devices (E.g. Microphone) - Needed - arriving 1-2 months

What to look forward to;
1. Minecraft movie sneak peek - before June 1st
2. Minecraft lets play series - On hold until recording software and recording devices.
3. Minecraft Adventure series - On hold until recording software and recording devices.
4. More updates - Blog will be updated more regularly when I have finished sorted out the current Computer/Laptop situation

Minecraft - Ending text with narration

If you have not already beaten Minecraft i suggest playing it legit. But for those who have, below is the ending narration with text.

Minecraft; The Novel - Entry 1

“One may say the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility” – Albert Einstein

The sea rolled slowly, mist had rolled in and the sun was rising slowly as I awoke, gasping for air as I crawled onto the beach. I choked, coughing up the sea water which had been in my lungs. My first thoughts of terror had to be pushed aside quickly; I was lost, trapped on some deserted island. The sun was rising quickly... too quickly. If I was still on earth then the geostationary orbit had certainly been messed up.

“Where am I?” I shouted but only the slow rolling waves responded. There was a rustle in the nearby tree, it was a Spider. A huge spider, my mind was made up instantly, this couldn’t be Earth. The spider was massive compared to regular spiders which I had been so accustomed to seeing back on Earth. It screeched and I lashed at it with my fist, leaving it with a clawed scar.

It leapt forward and i jumped back instinctively between the nearby trees. The spiders glare penetrated my mind, its red eyes staring blankly at me before it turned and scuttled away through the undergrowth. The shock had scared me into thinking more about where I was. If this wasn’t Earth then where was it? From what little I remembered of my life on Earth no planet encountered was like this, even the most recent planets only showed some forms of undeveloped life forms. As I thought about Earth, the less I seemed to be able to remember.

By the time I had finished mussing over my previous life, the sun had reached its optimum height, and it was midday. I scanned the area again; the spider was nowhere to be seen. My stomach grumbled and I reluctantly began searching again for food. I walked until I came to a clearing, a sheep grazed on some grass, a cow plodded slowly along beside it. I felt my stomach groan and my health fade away as I collapsed from malnutrition, the effects of many days of starvation happening in what felt like mere minutes.

I was moments away from starvation; I had no choice... at least that’s what I would keep telling myself after. I had never killed before, at least in my vastly deteriorating knowledge of Earth, I had never killed. Now I had to. I had no weapons, nothing at all; the cow was less than a meter away grazing next to the sheep. I crawled over quickly and using my remaining strength, I pounced. When it was done, my hands were sore and I held several pieces of raw beef. I ate a piece and immediately threw up over the cow carcass that remained lying beside me.

In a last minute choice I quickly stripped the cow of leather. It took me till mid-evening but i had finally finished. I had constructed a make-shift rucksack. I quickly put my remaining piece of raw beef into the pack and continued onwards. I needed a weapon; my experience with the cow was something I didn’t want to have to go through. The blood stained my clothes and the cold was sapping my strength.

I searched for some twigs and quickly gathered some along with some nearby cobblestone. I quickly crafted some weapons. My short time in boy scouts paying off immensely as I looked at my new stone axe, sword and shovel. The sun was setting, the day had gone quickly and the moon was already rising. I needed somewhere to stay. I quickly ran for cover, hiding inside a nearby cave.

The sun disappeared and I waited for my eyes to adjust to the darkness that now enveloped me. I heard a scuttling noise behind me. It was a spider, the same spider in fact, its red eyes glaring. The small cut i had made earlier was still there. It seemed to be savouring the moment as it scuttled forwards, then it jumped. I slid back but the beast landed on one of my legs causing me to scream.

I felt my head hit against the stone behind me. I was cornered, and I felt dizzy; I felt the world spinning as the spider prepared to jump again. It jumped. I was frozen in shock. “Don’t move” I turned briefly seeing a slender figure standing behind me, a thin tunnel behind. WOOSH an arrow shoot past my hair caught briefly in the breeze generated as the arrow hit its target. The spider fell dead as my saviour`s shadow fell over me. “Sarah, it’s just another zombie, leave it” a male voice rang out from the tunnel.

“Give me a second” a female voice rang out as my saviour stepped forward. Her long blond hair rolled down her back like an anime character. Her diamond armour sparkled in the faint moonlight, the bow slung across her arm as she walked forward and yanked her arrow out of the spider. Turning round with a small grin she pointed her diamond sword towards me. “You going to get up or am I going to have to put you down like that spider?”

Profile - Nether Portal

One of the most difficult objects to build in Minecraft is the Nether Portal. Requiring the use of Obsidian to be built, the Nether portal is made using 14 or 10 Obsidian blocks. They are lit using flint and steel. The Nether portal is used to travel to The Nether.

Profile - The Nether

The Nether is essentially Minecraft`s version of an underworld or ‘Hell’ as some players refer to ihttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gift. The Nether is a dark underground dimension with terrifying mobs that shoot fire and cause explosions. Along with the dangerous mobs there are lava flows, lava lakes and strange Nether fortresses.

Trivia; to enter the Nether you need to light a Nether portal (Made from Obsidian) using flint and steel and travel through the portal which that creates.

Profile - Far Lands

There is a place in Minecraft, far from the normal Minecraft landscape that most players see in their journeys. This place is the Far Lands. The Far Lands were an area of Minecraft that was in Minecraft versions before Beta 1.8 which was distorted beyond normal Minecraft levels. The Far Lands are situated around 12,550,820 meters from the centre of the Minecraft map – which would take players approximately 820 hours to walk to the Far Lands.Upon reaching the Far Lands the game becomes almost completely unplayable due to glitches and lag.

Trivia; A few players believe that the Endermen should be renamed Far Landers due to their slender tall appearance (one of the glitches that occurs near the Far Lands)
